How often should I schedule appointments?
We find it beneficial for checkups to be performed every six months. This interval allows us to monitor your oral health and make recommendations in a timely manner. More frequent visits may be recommended for patients receiving orthodontic treatment.

Why do you need to take X-rays (radiographs)?
Dental x-rays are pictures of the teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to screen for and help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. X-rays can show cavities, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Dental X-rays may also be taken as follow-up after dental treatments.
Radiographs detect much more than cavities. For example, radiographs may be needed to survey erupting teeth, diagnose bone diseases, evaluate the results of an injury, or plan orthodontic treatment. Radiographs allow us to diagnose conditions that cannot be detected during a clinical examination. If dental problems are found and treated early, dental care is more affordable and comfortable.

Why do I have a crown instead of a filling?
When the decay in the tooth is large or involves multiple surfaces of the tooth, a crown is usually recommended as it will give the tooth more strength. If a tooth has had a pulpotomy (“nerve treatment”), the crown strengthens and protects the tooth more effectively than a filling and is thus considered the standard of care.

Bleaching or Tooth Whitening
Bleaching should be considered only for those patients who have all permanent teeth erupted, are finished with orthodontic care, have good oral hygiene, and have a mouth free from decay. Tooth-whitening options include over-the-counter systems, whitening toothpastes, and bleaching trays made by a dentist. We do not recommend in-office bleaching for children under the age of 14. Common side effects from the bleaching process include tooth sensitivity to hot or cold. The use of a topical fluoride gel may help with the sensitivity.
